The most socially conscious theater in town, serving the underserved in tights and stage makeup..
The Scene
CPT was founded in 1981 by artistic director James Levine, in an effort to create a New York-style experimental theater theater setting in Cleveland. Often dealing with provocative political and social issues, CPT has become a showcase for alternative theater and a stage for culturally and racially diverse artists.
The Setting
CPT has grown from essentially a volunteer/artist organization that functioned on $5,000 a year to a $1,000,000 budgeted organization, dedicated to bringing an aggressive array of challenging, innovative and exciting programming throughout its season. In 1995, CPT acquired Cleveland's oldest performing facility, the Gordon Square Theatre, located just next door to the main stage.
The Selections
CPT hosts the annual New Plays Festival, the Ohio Independent Film Festival, and the Brick City community-workshop program. It also offers theater-arts classes for kids, as well as alternative workshops in scriptwriting, costume design, mime, movement and yoga.
