Tips for Mentor Headlands Beach State Park

Great park!!. I love Mentor Headlands, my son and I come up from Akron every summer with some friends. It's a beautiful beach and my son enjoys himself very much. My only issue is the walk to the beach. I would love for my son's Grandparents to come, but the walk in the sand it to long and to hard for them. I think that a boardwalk for the elderly and disabled would be an extra bonus and it would ideal so that EVERYONE can enjoy the beach.

That is my only complaint. I would love for my Dad to come and watch his Grandson play in the sand, but there is no way he could make the walk. :(

There's no reason to drive all the way to the Atlantic Coast when all the sun and people-packed sand expanses you need are 15 minutes from downtown Cleveland.. The Scene
A trip to Headlands State Park's mile-long natural sand beach makes for an almost perfect replica of a day on the banks of Atlantic City (minus the Trump properties). The largest beach in Ohio, lined with suit-changing shelters and concessions, provides sun worshippers with towel space, good swimming, a fantastic (scary) platform for diving and ample room for impromptu Nerf games. That's if you don't mind the thousands of other people with the same idea getting in your way: Headlands is generally packed with bikini-clad women, guys blasting their "NOW!4" compilation CDs, kids playing dangerous-looking games of keep-away and random joggers.

The Surroundings
We live in Cleveland, not the Caribbean, and seclusion isn't what we expected anyhow, right? But for a slightly less hectic spot, head for the breakwall at the east end of park, where fishermen quietly contemplate the day's catches. That may include bass, perch, bluegill and walleye, as well as plenty of Lake Erie regulars on the "throw back" list.

Ain't No Sunshine ...
The Headlands are open year-round, and a trip to the beach can be rewarding even when it doesn't involve the slathering of Hawaiian Tropic. A moderate section of the Buckeye Trail runs through the park, allowing one-on-one contact with plants, birds, state-protected marsh areas, and smallish but impressive dunes.

great spot. We stopped one day during our family vacation and were pleasantly surprised. The beach was beautiful and great for families! I would recommend it to anyone!
