Editorial Review for Cornerstone Book & Gift Shoppe – by T. Katrina Ramser
He's the Reason for the Season
Cornerstone offers a modern swing on religious merchandise, ideal for reaching a younger (perhaps non-believing) audience. One example: the "Left Behind" series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. This 12-title series of books is sweeping the nation, almost Harry Potter-like, with its fictional outlook on the Book of Revelations, posing the question, "What would you do if Jesus came back to take his followers and you were left behind?" Cornerstone's Money Tracts are the quickest way to grab attention, as they look exactly like real five-dollar bills. When unfolded, though, they deliver a Biblical message. (This revelation may, at first, cause some unpleasantness among receivers of a certain age.) The store also carries tiny, stocking-stuffer-sized cards printed with a picture of a Bible and the simple slogan, "Confused? Read the directions." In some circles, these things will trade better than Pokemons and Digimons combined.
Remember Me
Located in a not-particularly good spot next to Sears, Cornerstone has a tendency to be overlooked in the mall; the connotations that come with religious gifts sometimes hurt, as well. But the store is prepared to engage in (harmless) holiday battle, with catchy slogans to remind spend-happy patrons the whole point of the holiday, and these subtle gifts may hit home.
By the way, Cornerstone's owners do not know who is paying for all those "signed God" billboards, the ones located all over Cleveland and on myriad bus sides. The most recent spotting urges people to "Come over to my house on Sunday and bring the kids" but our favorite is still, "Don't make me come down there."
