Editorial Review for fire – by Charles Cassady
The Scene
Chef and owner Doug Katz cooks up fiery fare indeed. The spacious bistro offers a vista of the Shaker Square shopping plaza and is dominated by his ever-blazing clay- and tandoori-oven-equipped open kitchen. Cheerful Fiestaware, large windows and exposed brick and ductwork create a chic, modern-industrial vibe.
The Food
The fusion cuisine ranges from salmon and steak to duck and pasta, with a premium-priced cheeseburger thrown in just to demonstrate the alchemy of a proper flame. The house breadsticks, called "firecrackers," are named for crispiness more so than flavor, but for a taste with a kick, try the egg sausage and Yukon gold potato clay pot.

Shaker Square is quickly becoming our favorite destination for special occasions as well as casual nights out. We dined at fire this past Sunday for Easter brunch and had an absolutely fabulous meal. I ordered the strada, a special for the day, and could not have been happier. It was cooked to perfection, not too crispy, not too mushy-- absolutely just right. I also indulged with a mimosa and unlike other more stingy restaurants, the drink wasn't just fizzy OJ, but rather a perfect blend of OJ and champagne. We were so pleased with our meal that we stopped by this evening (Fri.) for a bite to eat after a movie (also conveniently situated on the Square). The restaurant was still quite busy at 9:30 PM, and we enjoyed another fabulous meal. The food was excellent and the service was attentive, but not overbearing. Even though we were dining a bit later in the evening, both the waitstaff and the kitchen paid just as much attention to getting the details right as if we had been dining at 7:30. We can't wait for the weather to get warm as we'll be spending many nights this summer enjoying terrific meals on the patio at fire.
Pros: Location, food, service

We were at Fire tonight for dinner after not going back for months after a bad breakfast experience, Brunch rather......I had the "gourmet" hamburger and after swallowing about 3 different bites that I thought just had some grissell in it I did not swallow and managed to pull out a piece of bone that was in the patty!!! God knows what all else I had already swallowed....I put it on my bread plate and showed the waiter and he took it to the kitchen to show the chef.....chef came out and appologized and said that they had been grinding their own meat but had switched to having it ground for them.....he had called the company to inform them about the bone I found....I was not charged for the hamburger....but will not ever go back....what else had been put through the grinder with the meat!!!!!!
Pros: can sit outside
Cons: $5 valet parking and no other choice, poor service, bad food, bad neighborhood
