Editorial Review for Barolo Grill – by Ephraim Mallery

In Short
The dining room decor features ivy strung with white lights and a fireplace casting a warm, comfortable glow on dark-wood accents. People crowd the bar even on weeknights, while romancing couples and high-class diners fill the tables. Starters include a bowl of lightly battered calamari, scallops and shrimp with creamy sauce. For entrees there's the puttanesca with kalamata olives and grilled sardines. Pan-seared rack of lamb arrives tende and crusted with black pepper and spice.

Wow!!! There is not a single thing I would change about this restaurant. That is rare for me to say. Usually there is something that missed. This restaurant is PERFECT!! Let's start as we get there. Complimentary valet parking...as we were trying to find a spot, we saw this and were excited. Little things, you know. We get in and we were missing one of our party (who didn't make it) and without missing a beat, we got sat at an appropriately sized table. This was just last night. Now for the server, Andrew: he is getting his own paragraph. Anyone who wants to be a professional waiter, should sit at one of his tables and just observe. It was all about the little things, helping with wine selection, meal choices, everything. He understood the little nuances. When I questioned the bottle of wine, he even brought me a glass of something else to see if I liked it more. It turned out, the bottle was very young and just needed to open up. So, basically, the best waiter in town. As for the food: Here is what was ordered: roasted tuna appetizer (absolutely phenominal-although Randolph's wraps are more to my tastes), the gnocchi with crab (absolutely amazing), NY Strip Steak (amazing by all accounts), Halibut (simply perfect) and my meal the seafood plate. This was the best meal, I have ever had in Denver. I cook a lot, and I eat out a lot. This was the BEST meal I have had in Denver. So, the long and short of it, phenomenal.

Pros: Everything

Cons: Nothing

This is the best Northern Italian restaurant in Denver. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful on the inside other then the somewhat ugly sound proofing on the ceiling. Our waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu and the wine list and recommended two excellent wines that paired very nicely with my meal. He and the chef were accommodating when another member of my party asked to have an entree heavily modified. The bread-sticks on the table are pretty good but a bit dry. They serve them with an olive dipping sauce that is quite good, if you like olives. The rosemary focaccia bread is very good but they only give you one small piece for each diner and you have to ask for butter and/or olive oil. The Antipasti Assortiti appetizer is phenomenal, with a wonderful assortment of three perfect tasting meats. For a main course, the braised duckling is rightfully their specialty. The portion is actually quite large and a good value at the price. The duck is excellently seasoned and braised with a highly complimentary olive based sauce. The accompanying small square roast potatoes are divine. The creme brulee is an excellent desert and is enough for between 2-4 people to share, making it a good value. I will definitely recommend this to anyone seeking the best high end dining experience in Denver.

Pros: Excellent Food, Knowledgeable and accommodating wait-staff, Beautiful ambience

Cons: They don't give olive oil/ butter with bread unless requested
