Editorial Review for 5 Ninth – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
Windows that open to the street beckon serious diners to the burly wooden door of this three-story brownstone. Just beyond the sleek entry-level bar hides a sunken garden patio surrounded by climbing vines; above is a dining room fitted with wooden church pews. Exposed beams and wrought iron lend a charming decor throughout. One-named chef Chino continues the New American fusion of departed Zak Pellacio. Green curry tricks out "Bobo's Farm Chicken," tempura chives accompany poached lobster and jalapeno heats up risotto.

Insider Tips
Where to SitThe outdoor patio is a coveted spot in summer. In cooler weather, request a table near the windows in the rear of the dining room for a bird's-eye view of the garden.
What to DrinkThe wine list--with many options in the $25-$45 range--is surprisingly affordable. Refreshing Valle Isarco Veltliner ($34) is an excellent start. Or begin with a cocktail from the signature list.
The ExtrasThe third floor can be reserved for private parties.

Put simply, I adore 5 Ninth. Each time I've been the food, wine, service and atmosphere has been amazing. Its a really great spot in the Meatpacking, some of which can turn ferral past 10pm, and the garden in the summer time is just the icing on the cake. Great value for money (I'm still dreaming about a mushroom risotto I had there in March 07), very cool ambiance inside, I love the way that the restaurant is spread out, over 2-3 floors...makes you feel a little like you're in someone's private home. Perfect hidden gem in the MP, which is why we keep going back again and again.
Pros: Excellent food, service, fab garden

5 Ninth was fine - I've been there twice, once for food and once for drinks - I was really unimpressed by the food. It was good - just good. the restaurant itself is beautiful. I found the menu very uninteresting. The drinks were good, I love the beer selection - I don't know, for my money, it tasted as good as any cafe you can find in the city and was way more expensive. The beet salad was enjoyable - but you can get a beet salad anywhere. Honestly, I'd rather spend my money on better food elsewhere.
