Bar Americain

Bobby Flay's mid-town brasserie

  • Elegant Private Rooms
  • Raw Bar
  • Weekend Brunch

Bar Americain, Bobby Flay's ode to regional American cooking, comes to life in a bright, lively brasserie setting in mid-town Manhattan.

Guests can enjoy a rack of pork with double apple butter, or visit the Northwest for wild salmon with a pinot noir reduction. The raw bar features fish and shellfish from both coasts, paired with flavors like tomatillo, coconut and habanero. Weekend brunch offerings include artisanal ham with biscuits and cream gravy or steel-cut oatmeal with stone fruits.

With its soaring ceilings, marble floors and warm lights, David Rockwell's design creates the perfect backdrop for a wedding reception, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs or lunch meetings. Group event spaces include two private dining rooms and an open, airy mezzanine, overlooking the dramatic bar.

Editorial Review for Bar Americain – by Kathleen Squires

The Scene
The adobe-accented room reflects the chef's fondness for the Southwest, while soaring ceilings and an open kitchen pick up on Times Square's theatrics. Show-goers, tourists, local business people and celebrities keep the space constantly abuzz, while on-the-spot service lends intimacy to its vastness.

The Food
Leave it to Bobby Flay to show that America's got flavor, with dishes like delicately fried squash blossoms stuffed with Southern-inspired pulled pork and a Florida-flavored red snapper encrusted in plantain and topped with a refreshing mango and avocado mix. A palate-pleasing pizza with caramelized onions, garlic, gruyere and chewy cubes of double-smoked bacon, and house-made potato chips with blue cheese dip have nationwide appeal. Flay slays hardest with his spice-rubbed steaks, so nicely seasoned that they don't need the accompanying Dijon molasses sauce. Surprisingly, there's no apple pie on the dessert menu, but the strawberry rhubarb crepes provide a sweetly powerful (and less cliched) punch.

My husband and I ate last evening at Bar Americain for our anniversary. We ordered the grilled pizza with bacon, carmelized onions and roasted garlic and the asparagus chopped salad with Vermont cheddar for appetizers. The pizza had amazing flavor, perfect crust and was surprisingly light. The asparagus salad had a tasteful dressing and a variety of textures that made it mmm so good. For the main course I ordered the Hanger steak and my husband the New York Strip. The hanger steak was perfectly cooked and had wonderful flavor. The New York Strip, which I also sampled came slightly over cooked and was in my opinion a bit too crispy and dry. Next time we'd order two hanger steaks. We ordered the chocolate cake for dessert and it was moist and flavorful. I didn't so much care for the banana sauce they put on top but it was still good. Overall I didn't want the experience to end it was a wonderful evening!

Pros: Drinks, Appetizers, Hanger Steak

Walking through the door, I was a little disappointed that the decor had not changed that much from the former steakhouse that use to be located at the site. The food, service, and price matches the targeted demographic...corporate cards, tourists, and NY residents with anticipation of great food and service from a renown chef, Bobby Flay. Wouldn't he want to be associated with something more than mediocre? Food, service, and atmosphere was fine but unfortunately a forgettable experience.

Pros: reliable food

Cons: reliable food...expected more
