Great Italian Fare – My wife and I went to Dominic's Santos on the enthusiastic recommendation of a friend and despite two scathing reviews on Yelp. We had high hopes, but mixed expectations.
We were greeted and seated immediately. The dining room was about 80% full on a Saturday evening and soon filled completely. The decor was nice - pleasant and interesting enough and the place looked very clean. We liked the open kitchen concept - it wasn't very noisy and we could see what's going on in there.
The service was great, although as it turned out, our waitress was Wendy, one of the owners. But it looked like the other diners were also getting very good service from the other waitresses. Our courses arrived in a timely manner - we never felt rushed and we didn't wait more than a few minutes between courses either. Everyone seemed attentive, on the ball and friendly without being overly chummy.
For an appetizer we had the stuffed peppers - big banana peppers stuffed with hot sausage and then baked or roasted and served with a spicy, tasty red marinara sauce. They arrived piping hot and were a taste sensation. A basked of tasty, warm, fluffy bread arrived at about the same time - it was delicious too and very handy for mopping up the delicious sauces.
Next were the house salad and wedding soup that were included with the entrees we ordered. My wedding soup was hot and very tasty. My wife's salad was cold and crisp, with fresh ingredients. We shared these and agreed that both were excellent.
The lasagna I ordered came out still bubbling in a hot baking dish, just the way I like it. The pasta, meat, cheeses and sauce combined for a delicious treat. It was a fairly large piece that I could have eaten in one sitting if I really felt like stuffing myself, but I ate half of it and saved half for later. No doubt, I will order it again sometime, after I try some of the other items on the menu. The Pasta Dominic that my wife ordered was even better. I won't try to describe it, but it was very large serving that provided more tasty leftovers.
The wine list was reasonably priced, with suggestions for pairing with entrees on the menu. The wines we selected were served promptly and went quite well with our meals.
We also got a pepperoni pizza to go for our teenagers at home. They loved it, and even though we were full, we tried it too and agreed with them. Great crust, sauce, cheese and pepperoni - a really tasty pie, not some mass-produced junk from a nationwide chain.
I don't know what those yelpers were thinking when they wrote their unhappy reviews - although the most recent happened to be dated exactly one year prior to our visit. Thanks to those reviews, I was hoping against hope for a nice meal, but prepared for the worst. I found absolutely nothing to complain about (okay, maybe they could dim the lights just a tad) and lots of reasons to return - often.
Home Made Pasta on the Westside! FINALLY! – I do a lot of business on the westside of Cleveland and this is my weekly stop. Love the pizzas, never greasy. Lunches are very reasonable...I can get in and out within 20-30 minutes. Try the Pasta Dominic, nice and spicy. Stuffed peppers are great as an appetizer too! They serve home made espresso tiramisu that is to die for! Always leave full and the menu offers a nice variety of Southern Italian foods.
Best West side Italian Food! – Great Italian food, great wine selection, great service.
This little italian restaurant is kind of a diamond in the rough. In a city lacking business, Dominic santos is the best restaurant i've been to in years. The idea of an open kitchen is genius to keep costumers entertained.
Pasta dominic is a great dish for a good price, I couldn't even finish it, and i eat a lot. My Family slit a pizza and they said it was the best they've had this far(we get takeout pizza every weekend) the soup was the best italian wedding soup to date. This little italian place was suggested to us by friends that can't get enough!
After dinner i was going to treat the family to ice cream at DQ but opted to stay here when the server suggested "banana fosters" it was the perfect ending to a great dinner. I suggest this place to anyone interested in quality, home made, italian food.
Bland tasting food, Overpriced/Small Portions – We opted for the Fettuccine Alfredo and the Lasagna. So we order. A half is 10.99 for lasagna and the full is 12.99. Kinda fuzzy math for half an order. I would expect a half order to be closer to $6.50 not 11. The bread was so good there was a nice crispy crust and then the insides of the bread tasted so light, just like a cloud. The bread was an absolute winner. High quality, real Italian bread. I would have been more impressed with olive oil and a plate or butter in a little dish (or both) It would have done that bread more justice. My wife recieved a salad and I received the soup of the day. Wedding soup. My wife enjoyed her salad. once again high quality ingredients. Real fresh grated cheese, fresh lettuce, jsut really really nice. My wedding soup was fantastic. The cup of it was really small. The Entrees: My lasagna was about 2.5 inches wide by 6 inches long and maybe 1-1/4 inch tall. That is what i get for 12.99 and a full size? I bit into a bite and it was bland. Everything but the noodles tasted homemade it was really good but it was extremely bland. My wife tried her Fettuccine Alfredo, the first words out of her mouth were. "well that is different. Her portion of Fettuccine was small for a "family style" portion or over priced at the same 12 dollars, take your pick. I tried the Fettucini and the same thing as my Lasagna, completely bland. So I tried something. I put a little salt on it. Suddenly, the flavor came to life, revealing the taste that was missing from the fettuccine. The sheer amount of old people in the restaurant should have tipped me off. Are they catering to the older crowd who live on restricted sodium diets and like to eat things bland? It was really interesting.. there were about 15 other people there and all of them were 65-70+ years old. This place missed the mark for me. Way overpriced or too small a portion and the food was extremely bland. If you are old and cant take spices this is your place, otherwise keep looking.
