The Scene
With three outposts around town, Sarabeth's Kitchen has become a well-known and reliable spot for casual dining at breakfast, lunch or dinner. This Amsterdam Avenue outlet has a citified rustic decor featuring small pastry cases, mullion windows, bentwood chairs and brass touches.
The Food
Lines form early on weekends for chive-scrambled eggs, pumpkin waffles lavished with sour cream, sticky buns, raisin scones and other quality baked goods. Lunch and dinner follow similar patterns--seasonal highlights include a robust autumn vegetable salad with apples, cheddar and celery root, and the cornmeal-crusted crab cake with julienne beets, sweet peppers and watercress. The dessert selection features simple winners like the candied pecan tarte and the spicy gingerbread ice cream.

Went for brunch on Sunday afternoon around 1:30pm, and was told there was a 20minute wait and it may be quicker because not everyone who had put their name down stayed around to wait. Ok, I understand if it's a little longer wait than the hostess claims but as forty five minutes approached and the other "tables for two" waiting outside had been seated I assumed I would be the next name called. To my surprise, there were people walking right in and being seated immediately as I continued to wait outside in the rain. When I approached the hostess (who wasn't the girl I had given my name too) and she claimed that those people being seated weren't present when their name on the waitlist was called, but since they came back they get priority. She insisted that is the restaurant's policy. Needless to say, if I knew this so called "policy" I would have NEVER waited, and left upon arrival rather than wasting part of my afternoon. I am thinking of going back this Sunday and telling them I put my name down last Sunday for brunch and according to their policy that should give me priority seating. I have never encountered such unfair treatment nor has ANY dining establishment followed such a ridiculous "policy". Clearly they need to train the hostesses on the etiquette of a proper waitlist.

I go to the UWS location all the time for Brunch. I don't mind the high prices, long waits, and often overworked wait-staff. However, during my last trip this weekend, I went with someone who asked for "just some hot water" when offered coffee. I was appalled to see the $1.50 charge for it on the bill. Sarabeth's management, if you're reading this, change this policy!! That is a ridiculous insult to customers paying close to $100 for brunch for four. Come on, Sarabeth's, at $15 for Eggs Benedict, you don't need to be charging for water.
