The Scene
If there were such a thing as the Exotic School of local dining, this would be its home: There are no booths, just thatched dining areas; no conventional tables, just low furniture made of carved wood or baskets; and no canned muzak, just recorded Ethiopian swing. Utensils are not a problem since (except upon request) there are none.
The Food
Forget what you know about the typical salad, meat, potatoes dining routine; here, none of that applies. The thin slices of bread that arrive with a tray of yogurt and mashed bean appetizers are meant for dipping. Entrees feature beef, chicken and lamb, but meat is used sparingly and mostly for flavor; instead try one of the lightly-spiced, mostly-vegetarian combos. Skip dessert, since ice cream isn't a part of the traditional diet, and go for coffee--the incense-heavy ceremony that accompanies the cup is worth the price of admission.

We tried appetizers of Sambusa (lentils and vegetables in pastry) and shared 2 vegetarian entrees (both very good and nicely seasoned.) What is outstanding about this restaurant is their injera, which is a big round of flat bread. You break off pieces and scoop up the food (they have forks for the less adventuresome.) Prices are inexpensive to moderate. Staff is friendly and can explain the dishes before you order.

We went to Empress Taytu's on a muggy night and found that the air conditioner wasn't working. It was almost enough to make us leave, but we'd been curious about the restaurant for some time and wanted to go. We got the meat and vegetable sampler and it was actually quite good. There was nothing remarkable about the dishes to me, but they were certainly good. The dorewat was a little bland to me, but that could just be inexperience with the food. Did I mention it was hot in there? We had water to drink with our dinner, but went the last 20-30 minutes without a refill. I don't know that I would go again, but the ambiance of the restaurant was really nice.
