Editorial Review for The Alcazar – by Anne Brooks Ranallo
The Scene
Fans of "Casablanca" appreciate the Alcazar, listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its funky and elegant Moorish architecture and its role in Cleveland's 1920s high life (Cole Porter once kept a suite here). Exuberant tile work, stucco walls, stone floors, courtyard fountains and arches as far as the eye can see belie the fact that, yes, you're still in Ohio. The hotel's location and moderate prices attract visiting artists, musicians and scholars from nearby University Circle.
The Details
The Alcazar offers 120 one- to four-room units including bed-and-breakfast suites, senior residences and corporate housing (most with kitchenettes, some with two baths) and features underground parking. The old-fashioned, Bogart-worthy ballroom hosts concerts, lectures, bar mitzvahs and weddings.

This hotel is beautiful, super clean, and unique in it's decor (for the Midwest, anyway!) It is quiet and peaceful, yet not stuffy. Some staff friendlier than others. Very kid friendly. They have done a wonderful job of keeping the historic flavor of the hotel, yet nothing seems worn out. this place beats the generic Holiday Inn type places by a mile! Reasonable rates too! We would definitely stay there again. Only complaints: we were not told that payment for our entire stay was expected when we chcked IN. Also not told parking was severly limited. Could only get a space in the garage for the last two nights of our 5 day stay. And then was suprised upon check out to get a bill for the parking!
Pros: quiet, walk to shops, food, warm and friendly
Cons: limited parking, no restaurant, original b'room sink
