Editorial Review for 501 Exchange – by T. Katrina Ramser

The Scene
This store is a delight for the tweaked "tween": It feels like walking into your best friend's closet, to be saved from having a bad clothes day thanks to her awesome, broken-in jeans and cool shirts that just happen to fit you, too. Venture right to a T-shirt with a transfer of the "Three's Company" cast pictured above the word "porn." To your left, a tight-fitting black T with the caption "69 is my favorite number." The shop's featured clothing label, Serial Killer, combined America's icons with a little cynicism and has made a pretty penny from it.

The Selection
The store has two long racks of jeans (mostly Levi's), in both men's and women's sizes and styles: Silver Tab, boot-cut, dark and faded, all used. The average price for a pair is $16; the store will buy yours for about $5. 501 Exchange also stocks baggy techno-style pants by twenyfive.com ($48) and Dragon Fly and Black Fly ($35-135) sunglasses. Both brands are excellent for protecting eyes against the sun's glare during outdoor wear-and-tear activities.

Insider Tips

The Real Thing

A vintage pair of Levi's, worth hundreds of dollars in the Japanese and former Soviet Union clothing markets, can be identified by a thin, red stitch on the inside leg.

Editor's Review

American pop culture, sensationally warped with laser-printed graphics and a good pair of used Levi's to go.  See the full editorial review.
