Editorial Review for Cleveland Cultural Gardens – by David M. Simon

Overview
It may sound like a cliche, but Cleveland truly is a melting pot. During its long lifetime, people of every ethnic persuasion have settled and prospered here. Divided into individual gardens, each garden salutes a different ethnic community that calls Cleveland home.

The Experience
Spanning both sides of East Boulevard, from St. Clair to Superior, and covering 50 acres, the Cultural Gardens roll north out of spectacular University Circle--home to over sixty institutions of interest. Each garden is distinctive in its own way, yet collectively they represent a city in harmony. While many of the new area attractions offer high-stimulus experiences, this remains a touching low-key study in diversity. Curving staircases, stone busts of historical figures and long Grecian columns pepper spots in various gardens adding to the greenery, flowers and trees.

I was surprised by the review, but saw the date of 2002. I visited the gardens yesterday June2004 and found them to be lovely. Although not if full repair, and for someone who may have know them in their hayday Maybe the previous reviewer was disappointed. But my friend and I were very impressed and anxious to go back to take photos and see more of the gardens at different times of day as the light will move through the trees. Flowers and plants seem to be revived and effort seems to be made to upgrade the gardens. I recommend them highly for a beautiful days outing.

Pros: historic, beautiful, serene

Cons: , stone repair needed, not well publicized

The Cultural Gardens, sad to say, are not the attraction they were when I was a child. During the 60s and 70s, the rate of vandalism was so high that many nationalities came in the removed all the statuary, etc. that was left to salvage. Over the years, some have been returned, but not enough to make it worth a trip. Too bad! It used to be beautiful.
