Now that nuova cucina has become as common in the city as Stadium mustard on a ballpark frank, a dining public raised on Chef Boyardee and bottled marinara has had to learn a new vocabulary..
The Scene
What do you call a glass-and-brick dining room dotted by columns and scented with the waft of fresh bread baking? The name is Massimo da Milano, a Northern Italian option just over the Veterans Memorial Bridge from the Gateway sports complex.
The Food
Field mushroom fettuccine and veal with sun-dried tomato pesto are the noshes of choice, with lots of crab and scampi dishes for the saltwater set. Weekdays, a picket line of stainless steel chafing dishes mark a quick pasta and pizza buffet; the in-house bakery is open to a public that carries foccacia bread back to the office.
The Fun
The Flats party zone is just a roll down a hill away.
