Editorial Review for Blue Point Grille – by John Hyduk
The Scene
The accents in this sprawling brick space, like worn life preservers and a brass ship's bell, are nautical but not overly cutesy. The drinking area is well-stocked with both liquors and bartenders paid to listen to your tales of crossing the Cape. Elbow room is at a premium on weekends when the BMW fleet comes in, swimming between the painted seascape to the blue-and-gold clothed tables.
The Food
The Blue Point manages to escape the nagging dreariness of all-fish-all-the-time programming by leaving no species unhooked (Honduran tilapia is on the menu) and no culinary style untried. The combinations can lead to occasional overkill, as in the sea bass with red curry coconut sauce. Instead, check out the "Simply Prepared" section of the menu, where Carolina grouper, Pacific swordfish and salmon receive a boost from whipped mashers.

I had the second ocassion to dine in this restaurant, this time with my guests sent by their hotel Concierge. Like my last visit, there were lots of empty seats in the bright front room available, but we were escorted to the dark back room where they packed all the people. I got an arrogant attitude from the front desk when I asked for one of those nice empty seats up front. The menu was the same as half a year ago, offering the standard overpriced fare without much creativity. Like my last visit, the wait for service was very long. As a seafood aficionado, I believe the baked oysters were good, the mussels a bit unfresh, the seafood chowder plain. They pushed for the expensive dish "Nag's head grouper" which I thought was unfresh and overcooked. My guests had the Halibut special and stuffed trout and all three of us did not finish our fish. The desserts were nice, but we went there for the fish. Overall, if you want the "Olive Garden" of seafood, Blue Point is the place. This is a restaurant that serves seafood, not a seafood restaurant. It doesn't even have fresh lobsters like Red Lobster. It seems the primary interst is to make money, not to excel in the food. THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR INTERESTING OR SUPERB FISH. The standard menu, unimpressive cooking style and quality makes it the McDonalds of its class, but you pay the high price for the decor and the name that it doesn't really live up to. I've had better seafood dishes (and service) in restaurants elsewhere in town, and even across the street at Metropolitan. So, if you are a seafood lover, don't go there. If seafood (or dinning out) is a rare treat for your gests, and you don't mind paying a lot, then this place might work.
Pros: Nice ambiance, if you ever get a table in the front room.
Cons: Overpriced, food has no taste, food not fresh, poor service with an attitude.

I reserved a table for 9 my birthday celebration and ended up having people cancel at the last minute because of bad weather, so I showed up to the restaurant with only 6 in my party. When I told the hostess about this, I got attitude from her and she made us wait 10 minutes until they could move us to a smaller table. What was the point of a reservation? Shortly after we were seated, the fire alarms started going off, and that lasted no less than 15 minutes, making our dinner conversation impossible. We didn't smell smoke or see any fire, so no one panicked, however it would have been nice if our server had explained why the alarms went off. I ordered the stuffed lobster tail special and it arrived cold and overdone. When I finally flagged the served down, she said she'd have it heated up, but never apologized or offered to bring me a new meal. It was instead returned to me rearranged on a new plate, probably microwaved, and even more overdone. I could barely eat another rubbery bite and ended up taking the $50 leftovers home out of spite. Blue Point is overrated and definitely overpriced. I have had better service and a better meal at Red Lobster,
