Editorial Review for Civilization – by Colleen Doyle
The Scene
Nestled in historic Tremont, Civilization looks right at home a stone's throw from Lincoln Park. Inside, dark wood and tiny tables allow for a good read and a quiet conversation surrounded by, at most, a dozen coffee-sipping people. All the other accoutrements of a fine beanery abound, from European chocolates and teas in tins to Italian syrups for fancy sodas.
The Food
Civilization serves up simple, but appetizing lunch fare. Beside soups and chili, the perky percolators prepare a customized sandwich to accompany your java. Choose from bagel, croissant, panini or wrap to hold the goodies together, then pick from a selection of meats, veggies and cheeses. For dessert, there are innumerable treats ranging from the nearly innocent scone to highly naughty tortes and cheesecakes. Not too taxing on the wallet, it will still cost you more than a morning joe from Mickey D's.

I went here on a whim one day this summer when I was touring Tremont and desperately needed caffeine. I'm so glad that I did. Inside an old (built in 1881) apothecary, most of the original drawers, shelves, and fixtures remain. The sign said they used locally micro-roasted beans which really got me excited. Being summer I got an iced mocha, and it was the best I've had in Cleveland. Good espresso flavor with a little chocolate and not overly sweet. My girlfriend and I then started going every Saturday morning. She and I both agree the best cappuccino we've had in Cleveland. Their espresso didn't have as much crema as I had hoped, but great flavor. The one slightly disappointing thing was their iced tea, whichever black variety they had; not as much flavor as I usually prefer. They also have bagels, muffins, other bakery and sandwiches/soup if you desire a little food. I love going here, and whenever I desire a great cup of coffee, cappuccino, or coffee, this is where I'll go.
Pros: Best coffee/coffee drinks I've had in Cleveland, great atmosphere
Cons: Few power outlets, no internet if you really want to do work

This would a nice, cozy place to meet someone for coffee & conversation. However, if you're looking for a quiet place to curl up with a book, I wouldn't recommend this place. Although the decor is nice, the wooden chairs and tables aren't conducive for getting lost in a good book. Also, most of the other patrons were involved in conversation and groups kept coming through, making it hard to concentrate on my reading (it's small so it's impossible to find a distraction-free corner). The service was good and the staff was friendly.
