Editorial Review for USS Cod – by David M. Simon
The Scene
Docked permanently in Lake Erie, the USS Cod served America during World War II. On seven Southwest Pacific patrols, it sank 12 Japanese battleships.
The Experience
Climbing down the hatch of this National Historic Landmark is like traveling back in time; each step down takes you back another decade. The first thing you notice is how small it is inside. Because the Cod has not been altered from her patrol design, visitors must enter and exit through the original hatchways and climb up and down ladders. The corridors are tight, and if you're even a little bit claustrophobic, this might not be the thing for you. Those who don't mind the pinch can check out crewman's quarters or mimic command of the bridge. You can even look into the open mouth of a waiting torpedo tube. Combine this with a tour of the Steamship William G. Mather, docked just up the road, and get an in-depth look at life both on and under the sea.
