Editorial Review for Nature Center at Shaker Lakes – by Charles Cassady Jr.
The Scenery
Most greenspace in Shaker Heights seems to be overarching shade trees and border hedges on luxurious lawns, but there's a pocket of parkland here that's like no other. Nestled between busy thoroughfares of Fairmount and Shaker Boulevard is Doan Brook, its marshes and two man-made lakes dating back to the area's early settlers.
The Wildlife
Chipmunks, snapping turtles and 250 species of birds thrive here, in vegetation so thick and verdant that the only sign of encroaching civilization is the sound of cars whizzing past just yards away.
The Controversy
The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes owes its existence to the Clark Freeway, a planned mid-1960s highway corridor from downtown Cleveland to the east. Residents protested the project and successfully had the targeted construction site turned into a protected wetland.
