Editorial Review for Bavarian Village – by Randi Schmelzer
The Scene
Officially called Bavarian Village Ski Outfitters and Village Snowboards, this store's name fails to mention of the huge selection of sunglasses, ski jackets, boots and skate wheels it's amassed in 26 years of business. The crowded, cluttered shop is wall-to-ceiling equipment and apparel, featuring popular brands such as Atomic, Line, Burton (they've got lots of Burton logo-emblazoned shirts), DynaStar, M3 and Elan; the employees are well informed and have actually tried the majority of the equipment on sale. This season, they're pushing the new Salomon "Pilot" ski-binding system, and make frequent references to "space-age composite" and "high-tech" materials. You know--lots and lots of pockets, waterproof, breathable.
It's All Downhill from Here
Practically hidden behind Boater's World in a small shopping complex, Bavarian Village caters to families, offering a huge selection of gear for kids. This includes helmets, very small skis and boots, and a great selection of brightly colored polar-fleece hats. The store sells instructional videos for all levels of winter-sportspeople, and its selection of Hot Chillys canned long underwear is great, if not a little on the expensive side.
Bus Trip! Bavarian Village arranges several ski trips each month to resorts in snowy states near Ohio; this season, there's one to Banff, as well. Like similar group trips to the casino in Windsor, participants are treated to decent discounts (a day trip to Holiday Valley runs $65) and the pleasure of not driving. But you have to be ready to put up with a busload of strangers, some of whom may have better equipment than you.

Insider Tips
What Price Skiing?BV's prices are a little high, but most gear can be purchased in a reasonable package form. Snowboards and skis start in the $200s and go up to more than $800; boots and bindings run from $100-$600, although you can still get deals on last-year's goods.
You Didn't Want to Ask ...Bavaria is an Alp-covered state in the southern region of Germany. Its capital is Munich, and not all of its 12 million citizens drink beer all day while listening to "um -pa-pa" music.
