Editorial Review for The White Oaks – by Jef Taylor
The Scene
Originally opened in 1928 as a speakeasy and gambling hall, White Oaks still brims with Prohibition-era artifacts, from the front-door peephole to the main hall's photos of machine-gun wielding barkeeps. It also has the feel of a cozy hunting lodge: Red lights hang over wood-paneled rooms, woodsy scenes share wall space with stuffed fish, and wintertime fires are kept ablaze in six huge fireplaces. If you're lucky enough to get a window seat, enjoy the spectacular Cahoon Creek ravine view.
The Food
What this standard fine-dining fare lacks in inventiveness, it makes up for in taste. Bacon-wrapped filet mignon in mushroom glaze, tender roast duck and enormous, fresh lobster tails are all good bets. Entrees come with twice-baked potatoes and fresh vegetables, and a generous salad. If you can find room for dessert, the strawberry-covered cheesecake is worth the extra calories.

Another couple and ourselves, decided to celebrate our 20 something anniversaries at White Oaks. Our previous experiences had been very good, however on Sun. Mar.23, it was pathetic. The salads were wilty, duck greasy, dry, and overpowered with sauce. Beef Wellington was served well done and not rare as requested. A corrected Wellingto was served 30 minutes after the rest of the party had finished eating. The rice was salty, overcooked, and nasty looking. Veggies were hard and over seasoned. Scampies and venison were acceptable. The bus boy did a good job of filling glasses and removing dishes however the waitress never returned to the table until she presented the check. What a disappointment this special event turned out to be.
Pros: parking, atmosphere, coffee
Cons: food quality, food presentation, wait staff
