My family has taken our "Autumn Trip" up the Great River Road for the last 41 years. It is a very special day with family, everyone in a rented van looking at the colors on the cliffs on the way up to the Whitman Hotel where we enjoy a great meal and then and stop at the many antique stores in Grafton on the way back. I would highly recommend it whether you drive, walk, or bike.

With nice bike trails, spectacular views of the river that Mark Twain loved, and nice towns dotting the expanse of this road, the Great River Road offers a nice family day trip or quick getaway from urban St. Louis. Crisp, sunny autumn days in Alton with the beautiful historic houses are definitely worth a trip!
Pros: Short drive from City, Beautiful Foliage, Tourist Info Center
Cons: Floods occassionaly, Some attractions busy, Some Railroads Nearby

Many Sundays I took a motorcycle ride along the Great River Road. I am not a bicycler often I can appreciate why this is the best spot. The trail offers a view of the river, bluffs, and trees. In the fall it is especially beautiful. The trail is near the highway with easy access points all along the river to jump on the trail. There are a few shops where bicycles can be rented. There are plenty of places to stop for a picnic and even a couple places where you can go to a local restaurant. No where else in the midwest or even in Virginia have I seen a place better suited to bicycling than the Great River Road to Pere Marquette park. The lodge is a great place to stay overnight before or after your ride.

The Great River Road is a very scenic drive, during the months of October throuth April you can see many bald eagles.

FYI. Elsah is not between Pere Marquette State park and Grafton so it will be difficult to stop there first on the way south. Elsah is south of Grafton and between there and Alton. We wouldn't want to get anyone lost although we have to feed the Bald Eagles somehow.
Pros: Majestic scenery, Free, Well maintained path
Cons: highway crossings, far between services, Raging Rivers Park
