Call first for Malaysian food

by raffs at Citysearch

We went there several times now and we always call first to find out if they were sereving malaysian menu that night - the reason for that is because they only have of whihc I think 1 cook that can cook malaysian food. ANd this cook for some reason is not always there. Nice restaurant, malaysian food had it's own menu with quite extensive options, and you can say that the food is good.

Best in town by far

by bigfanofood at Citysearch

This place is by far the best sushi in Cleveland. Ignore the awards anyone gets - these are based on advertising. Pacific East has the freshest, best cuts you'll get. My only complaint would be the lack of variety of rolls, because that's more of an American adaptation of sushi and they're a little too authentic to play that game. On the other hand, you can design your own so who cares. The service is rapid and frequent, and the quantities are hefty. The price is pretty much the same or a little less than the other places in town, but seriously, don't be fooled by amateurs. If you try somewhere else, just commit to trying this place, too, so you can compare them. If you like QUALITY sushi and sashimi, PE is the scene for you. If you're going to pick up women and drink martinis, that's about the only reason to go to a "Rockier" environment.

  • Pros: Freshest fish, largest quantities, best service
  • Cons: Parking on road, a little crowded, not very classy

Good enough for a quick fix

by KananRoad at Citysearch

I've gone to this place several times, and the food is pretty good, if not authentic. The last time I went, I ordered a donburi (rice bowl with soupy egg topping and choice of meat), and the cooks clearly didn't know what they were doing. They mixed takuan (white radish pickle) into the donburi, something akin to pouring your wine on top of your entree--those things are supposed to be separate. Kind of gross, especially since takuan is an acquired taste for most Americans. They also mixed in these bright red sweet pickles that usually go with spicy things like curry rice. Again, another sign they didn't know what they were doing. We ordered a big bottle of plum wine, and the wine we got tasted sugary. When we checked the label it said that it was a grape wine with plum flavoring. Another negative for that visit. I'm not in a big hurry to go back, but I know eventually I will because it's convenient, not too expensive, and good enough for a quick fix.

  • Pros: Ambience, proximity to other things to do
  • Cons: Food is not authentic

Thank you from a visitor

Last night in Cleveland, wanting Japanese food...No teppiyaki, no over priced sushi bar...Okay, found this place on internet...Parking left something to be desired...Once I got in, I could see why...The food was phenomenal, the service was great, the value was worth the drive from Tower City...Tempura was very light and crunchy, the miso soup didn't taste like it was a package, the gohan was perfect...This sansei from Phoenix, loves this place; if work takes me back to Cleveland, I will be back and know where to park!!!

  • Pros: Authentic food, Friendly staff, Good value
  • Cons: Parking

best sushi in cleveland, clean and delicious!

by bornncleveland at Citysearch

I first started going to Pacific east when my family came here, on a recommendation. Now this is the restaurant that my family most often frequents. We are serious about good food, especially good asian cuisine, driving to canada just for the good restaurants. Depending on the day, the sashimi is fresh and excellent. When I say depending on the day, I mean the day that they have their weekly shipment of fish it is the freshest. They added a malaysian menu that also has delicious hot entrees that are reasonably priced and satisfying. I would recomment getting the sushi & sashimi lunch or sashimi lunch or maki combo for lunch, because the value is excellent. My favorites are the hamachi collar (grilled yellowtail fish), Ocean roll (fried oyster), and spicy salmon. An excellent restaurant, my favorite in cleveland. If you are a true sushi afficionado you should drop in and be impressed :)

  • Pros: sashimi quality, service, lunch prices have great value
  • Cons: I would not recommend getting the noodles, only because the sashimi is where it's all at!

Could actually the best sushi in the Cleveland area

by freelancer77 at Citysearch

If you're looking for excellent sushi in the Cleveland area, be forewarned: for some reason, the downtown Sushi Rock, and its sister establishment in Beachwood, keep receiving accolades as "the best sushi in Cleveland." Make no mistake here: these two establishments, in my experience, are essentially painfully trendy (and expensive!) bars that happen to serve decent sushi. If you're looking for an actual Japanese restaurant that serves brilliant sushi, Pacific East is perhaps your best bet in the greater Cleveland area. The fish is fresh, and cut into generous sashimi slices and large, delicious and often imaginative rolls (try the Ocean roll). If you're not a raw fish lover, the restaurant's Japanese cuisine menu -- quite a tome in itself -- offers very many cooked dishes, big noodle soups, salads and appetizers, as well as a few desserts. Beyond that, the place recently opened a whole new kitchen to supply the newest addition to their offerings: an entire Malaysian menu, which offers plenty of curries, noodles, rice dishes, flatbreads and various other vegetarian and non-veg dishes. I'm a sushi purist, but the few Malaysian dishes I've sampled from friends have been very tasty.

The room is painted deep blue, and the servers are helpful (albeit, on certain nights, busy). The other huge attraction of Pacific East is the prices -- far more reasonable than most sushi joints in the area, and for a much more generous serving of food. Please, try this place -- you'll never eat second-rate sushi again in Cleveland. Finally, one quick caveat: reservations are essential on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

  • Pros: The brilliant sushi/sashimi, the huge cooked-food menus, and the very affordable prices.
  • Cons: Little street parking (try the lot down the street); hard to get into on Thursday, Friday or Saturday without reservations.

Malaysian cuisine

by pcorea at Citysearch

All of Cleveland is buzzing about the new Malaysian cuisine in town, and being Malaysian myself, I decided to put it to the test. I tried 3 of the many Malaysian staples that they had to offer: the Kueh Teow (like chow-fun, only better) and it was very authentic. So was the Hainanese Chicken rice and the Bobo Kacang ( dessert). Safe to say I will be back to test the extensive menu to make sure it lives up to expectations of my Malaysian palate.

  • Pros: Extensive Menu
  • Cons: Closed between 3&5

best sushi in OHIO

by labuz1 at Citysearch

I've eaten sushi in just about every sushi restaurant in Ohio. I've eaten in top notch NY, LV, & Chicago sushi houses. Pacific East is the most dependable & freshest sushi you will find between NY & Chicago. Problem is, now it's the ONLY restaurant that I ever want to go to....

  • Pros: fresh fish, friendly sushi chefs, good variety of fish

Hopefully this one will stay!

Pacific East's location at the corner of Mayfield and Coventry has never seemed to be able to keep it's occupant for more than a few months, but so far, this delicious sushi restaurant has stood the test of time for more than a year. And I think I know why: fresh, affordable sushi in an area frequented by college students with plenty of spare time (and money, sometimes).

They offer larger platters of sushi served on boats (the more people, the bigger the boat), teriyaki, noodle soup, and tempura ice cream for dinner - so there's something for everyone, even if it's our friend Andrew who will come here and only eat rice. The sushi is surprisingly fresh for Cleveland, the rolls are tight (yo), and the staff is friendly and quick with the water refills.

  • Pros: sushi boats!, fresh fish, unique rolls
