1/9/09 I've been coming to Jack's Deli for many years and always recommended Jacki's as the best New York style deli place in Cleveland, but times have changed. So has the quqality of the food and the slow and rude service. Was there Friday night. Newly arrived guests receive their plate of pickles--where's mine? "Hey, man I'll get it!" was the response I got from one of the non-servers. Order what I thought was a simple selection -- 1/2 sandwich (corner beef) and a bowl of matzo ball. I waited and I waited and I wait. The soup finally arrived. The waitress had asked, "Do want a cup or a bowl." A bowl. NO EXPLANATION WAS MADE BY THE WAITRESS REGARDING A PRICE DIFFERENTIAL. The 1/2 sandwich finally arrived long after I had finished my soup. It would have been nice to have both of them together. The bill arrived with an extra charge of $1.50 for "open deli." I went to the cashier and was told the extra $1.50 is for a bowl of soup. The waitress was called over and proceeded to argue with me. The manager was called and politely took the $1.50 off my bill and apologized for the mistake of the waitress. As I was leaving I heard the waitress and cashier cattily dishing me for bring this to their attention. According to the papers there is a recession on -- many people are avoiding resaturants altogether. The folks at Jack's need to wise-up!

I went to Jack's a half a year ago, and I still remember it today. They have great french toast, which I had for a late breakfast, while my girlfriend was eating a perfect matzoh ball soup. Decor feels like an upscale diner, with a lot of wood and stainless steel accents. I look forward to eating here next time I visit Cleveland!

  • Pros: Ambience, quality food, great Jewish diner menu
  • Cons: Difficult to find in a strip mall on a busy intersection

Although I am Catholic, I love Jewish food. Jacks is by far the best sandwich, knish, and pea soup in the area. On top of that, the staff is especially friendly and helpful, something that is not common in neighboring delis. The decorations havent been changed since probably the '70s but that just creates a cozy atmostphere. I highly recomend the Clevlander on Challah!

  • Pros: inexpensive, friendly, alot for your money

The Scene

Even with weekend waits up to 45 minutes, Near East Siders come regularly for Jack's Jewish deli-style food and casual atmosphere. The meat slicers know patrons by name, and the longtime waitresses call diners "sweetie" or "doll." The meal will probably take longer than expected, but that's okay--that's just more time for gossiping.

The Food

Although breakfast is served all day, folks line up early for Jack's thick French toast, fluffy omelettes and golden waffles. Even better is the traditional fare; Alvie's bonanza (an excellent smoked fish plate), eggs scrambled with lox and onions, and huge fried blueberry or cheese blintzes with sour cream are highlights. No pretention is required when sidling up to hearty treats like knishes, matzoh-ball soup, chopped liver, lean corned beef and incredible chocolate phosphates. Jack's grills a nice trout, too.
